This blog is simply the story about my little life
with my sweet family that the Lord has blessed me with
and the day in, day out things that we do.
It basically is my online diary/photo album of our life.
I'm glad you're here!

Grocery $hopping!

Sheesh! When did groceries get so expensive?
I went grocery shopping last week and I was absolutely shocked when the clerk told me how much I owed!
It was $315.62! Granted, I did buy a lot, but it seems like it was $100.00 more than it should be.

I am only buying groceries for three of us now and I never paid this much back when I was buying for a family of six!
My helper, Hayden, circ 2007 (I miss these days so much when I had one or all or a combo of my boys helping me, we always had such fun!)
I bought enough groceries for meals for two weeks and all the things we were out of.

The only meat I purchased was chicken and bacon because we have a freezer full of beef, venison and fish, so we can't blame it on that.

I did have to buy three types of vitamins, which were expensive, but other than that, it's just normal groceries. Also,  I shop at a bag it yourself discount place.

In years past, this would be my typical grocery haul for two weeks worth of groceries for a family of six.

I remember that I paid about $175.00 on average for this many groceries. It sure looks like a lot more groceries than what I got the other day.

Here I am with the van full of groceries for four people back in 2008.

I paid about $200.00 on average for two weeks worth of groceries.

I have been paying on average about $200.00 to $225.00 for my groceries over the past several years.
Why in the world did it jump up so high this time? I just got paid and this took almost my whole check. It really bummed me out.
When I got home I told my husband that maybe we can try and make these groceries last for a month rather than just two weeks. He was very supportive and said he would try it with me. That night instead of making a fresh batch of clam chowder that I had planned earlier, he suggested that we eat up the leftovers we had in the fridge! Now that's the spirit!
The rising cost of food is a bit disheartening, but now I am determined to start planning more budget conscious meals.
I am going to go through all of my vintage budget cookbooks and find some money saving recipes. I also will be searching the internet for websites and blogs about how to stretch the food budget.
This is just ridiculous and frankly, I can't afford it. I am determined to do better and cut my grocery bill down at least $50.00, preferably $100.00 the next time I shop.

"She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from afar. She gets up while it is still night; she provides food for her family." Proverbs 31:15-16

Hugs, Sharon

I so know what you're talking about! It's just me and my hubby and you wouldn't believe the amount of money I spend on groceries. I don't buy anything lavish either!! Everything is going up except our paycheck!

I print coupons off the net and this saves a lot ! Mind you, there is only two of us (me and hubby) but our kids normally eat at least once a week with us. There are about four sites that I get my coupons off of and it helps !

Have a great day,

the price of groceries **has** gone up quite a lot, sharon. i'm keeping an eye on things to pad our pantry with and creating simpler meals that will stretch the paycheck. i'm thankful we have what we have but golly, the prices are a bit frightening.

Hi Sharon~ I too shop at Winco here in California and you are right things are way more expensive now than they used to be. I shop for just me and Roger and it seems like the bill is always around $100-$150 every Friday. But hey it looks like you saved $1.00 I am sure that helped a lot :)

Hi Sharon,
I used to read your blog and it's great to see you blogging again. I always smile when reading about your adventures.I think your warm personality comes through yur writing. I found this blog about groceries really interesting. I live in Australai and the price of groceries is unbelieveable. I have a family of four in total and we would spend at least $300 a week on groceries. This doesn't include mild, bread, cheese and eggs which are delivered to the fornt door. In Australia there are only two major groceries stores. So they really have a monopoly. We also pay about $1.45/litre for petrol(gas). That's about $5.60 gallon. At the moment the Australian dollar is worth about the same as an American dollar... I always look at things on the web in the States and think it is so cheap... However I think in Australia because the cost of living is so high we are paid more.
A couple of years ago a Costco opened in Melbourne. I can't wait for one to come to our city...
Oh well, us housewives will have to keep thinking of marvellous things do with mince (hamburger).Thank goodness my family aren't fussy eaters...
Keep up the blogging
