This blog is simply the story about my little life
with my sweet family that the Lord has blessed me with
and the day in, day out things that we do.
It basically is my online diary/photo album of our life.
I'm glad you're here!

A spooky romantic dinner for two!

One of my ways of dealing with the empty nest syndrome is to rekindle the romance with my husband. Now don't get me wrong, we have always had romance, I'm just talking about cultivating and really making our time together special again. I want to cleave to my husband! We have been so busy raising our four sons, working, doing family things, etc. that it's really nice to concentrate on us again! We have been married for 29 years and we have made it a priority to go on dates and have alone time, but there is more of a freedom with it now that the boys are all grown.
It's been really fun for Eric and I to be alone a lot again, kind of like when we were newlyweds. We have been enjoying each other and valuing our time alone together. We have been going on dates, camping alone, going out riding on our quads, etc. One other simple way that has been really fun for me is to plan these romantic dinners for two in our living room. In the middle of my sadness with my kids growing up and my role as full-time mother comes to an end, it is fun for me to have something to look forward to and having these romantic dinners has been a really fun thing! I just started doing this and this Halloween themed dinner is just the second one I've done, but I have been having so much fun picking up dishes, wine glasses, napkins, etc. for more themed dinners. Click here to read about our first one.
A few months ago I started getting the idea that it would be really fun to make a good dinner for Eric and I and set the table with a Halloween theme. The plates above were the inspiration! Before you think I went off the deepened, I want to clarify that it's not the wacky bat and the goofy ghost that I like, it's the cute black and orange boarder. I looked and looked and could not find any thing with a cute boarder that  had a cute center too, so I purchased these funny ones at Goodwill for .49 cents each and I simply......
...bought two solid black plates and used the plastic silly plates as a charger with just the cute black and orange striped boarder showing. Cute huh!!!
I really wanted to find some cute Halloween lunch sized plates to put in the center, but I couldn't find any, so I just used these awesome vintage frightful cat paper plates! Aren't they great!
Oh, before I get too far here, lets talk about the table coverings. I cheated and simply used some black and white checkered fabric for the table cloth that I had in my fabric box. I didn't hem it or anything. It worked wonderfully. Then I layered it with a wonderful piece of orange burlap that I found at rummage sale for .25 cents. This picture is before I ironed it. Although, it was hard to iron and didn't look that much better after I ironed it. I topped off the orange burlap with these two fabulous web placemats that I found at the Dollar Tree!
Once I got rolling, I was having so much fun! Look at these amazing black and orange stripped cups! They were a thrift store find for just .25 cents each.
I love these cool spider plastic wine glasses. They were another find at the dollar store.
I didn't know what to do for napkins and I was so tickled when I found two orange and white stripped tea towels at the grocery store! They are perfect and a great price of $1.49 each!
I found these cute wooden pumpkin napkin holders at Goodwill for just .49 cents each!
I love my centerpiece! I have seen some wonderful spooky candelabras in magazines and on blogs and wanted to make one of my own. I found the candlestick at St. Vinney's on the very day that I had this dinner! It was wooden with silver touches and as soon as I got home from town at about 6:00, I rushed out side and spray painted it flat black! I used that wonderful fast drying paint, so it was ready in 15 minutes. I then put in three black tall candle tapers and spread out some fun webbing and spiders that I got at the  Dollar Tree.
It turned out pretty effective didn't it!
Here's how each place setting turned out. It's so cute it's scary! hee hee!
I'm really happy with how it's all coming together!
I forgot to mention that I used an old rickety card table, so it was hard to keep everything on the table from wobbling around! I also brought in these two old chippy black chairs that I had out in the garden shed. They look perfect with the table setting!
It looks like we're having dinner in a quaint little restaurant!
Well, the table's all ready, so it's time to bring out the dinner!
Here's the menu! Haha! Just kidding!
Actually, I really wanted to make a fun spooky dinner, but didn't have time.
Plus, we had all those left-overs from the big football party we had two nights before, so we just had that for dinner.
 We had delicious barbecued chicken.
 ....pasta salad....
 ....Eric's famous barbecued beans....
 ....and my potato salad.
 We can't forget the milk!
And for dessert....a chocolate brownie with mint frosting! Mmmmm!
Everything's ready honey, come on in to eat!
What a "boootiful" evening! haha! We had such a nice dinner with great conversation. Eric appreciated all of my effort. I found myself looking forward to this all day. I'm glad there's a silver lining to the empty nest syndrome. I can't wait to do this again and again!
